gDiapers: the Full Review

Okay... as promised, a full review of gDiapers.  I used them for 10 days while visiting family; two of those days were a 12 hour road trip.  Except for one issue, I LOVED them.  I'm going to break things down into sections and give gDiapers a grade as well as compare them to disposables and cloth (Motherease and various pocket diapers).

Ease of use:  gDiapers=A, disposables= A+, cloth=B

I found gDiapers easy to get on, even on a squirming child, and easy to "check" for correct fit.  "Loading" the cover with the flushable was also easy enough.  And since they close with Velcro, that part is quick.  Really it is only due to the need to load in the flushable that they don't get an A+. Of course, there is more work in getting rid of them if you choose to flush instead of throwing away. A new user can get confused as to which is the front since the velrco is opposite from disposables, but it's not too hard to remember the "g" goes down.

Urine Leaks:  gDiapers=A, disposables= A-, cloth=A

I have a very heavy wetter and a moderate wetter.  EVERY diaper will leak with them at some point when used at night or on a car trip. That's just a given I now expect! G's did as well as cloth... maybe a bit better... and better then disposables. At least twice, leaks were actually due to my not putting the diaper on right. For example, we started our trip with two dry diapers. At the first stop, 2.5 hours into the trip, Miriam wearing a gDiaper was wet... but not NEARLY as wet as Evan wearing a disposable!

Control of Blowouts:   gDiapers=A, disposables= C, cloth=A+

I have one child who has at least one HUGE blowout type BM each day. They are hard to control. Disposables fail 40-50% of the time. Only once did any stool get on clothing with the G's. Two other times a very small amount got out of the liner onto the cover (but no farther).  The "normal" BM child had no issues.

Cuteness:  gDiapers=A+, disposables= C, cloth=C

They really are too cute!

Fit:  gDiapers=A+, disposables= A+, cloth=B

G's are easy to fit on both children and seem very comfortable for them.  They are trim fit just like disposables.

Cost:  gDiapers are comparable to a good disposable once you have the cover.  You can get the liners for 40 cents each, which is what a quick search showed me you would usually pay for a Huggies Supreme diaper.  The gDiaper cloth covers at $16-19 are comparable to cloth diapers.  So I find them very comparable.

Washing: The gDiaper covers are easy to wash. I will say that you DEFINITELY need 3-4 per child.  With only two per child, there were times I had to use a disposable because a cover had been washed and wasn't dry yet when the second cover became soiled as well.

The plastic liner that holds the flushable liner is another story!  This is the ONE thing that stops me from loving gDiapers. The plastic liners are fine if the child just pees.  If the liner is wet (and it often isn't), you can just rinse it and line dry.  They dry quickly, 15-30 minutes tops. The issue is when there has been a BM.  BM's always get on the plastic liner since the flushable kind of clumps up when wet. Remember, I have a child with explosive BMs. It gets EVERYWHERE in the plastic liner.  The only way to get it out was to put them in the utility sink and use running water and brush.  If you're the type who can't touch poop... well, gDiapers are probably not for you. I don't mind so that part wasn't a big deal.  What IS a big deal is that the stain does NOT come out and, even worse, neither does the smell! I rinsed in cold water and scrubbed with a brush, scrubbed in detergent with he brush, soaked in warm water and detergent, and then rinsed in hot water, scrubbed again.  I tried all kinds of variations on the above including washing in the washing machine. The washing machine DID seem to get rid of the smell but not the stain.  The only way to get rid of both was bleach... which the manufacturer says not to do! I plan to call them about this issue and will report back to you.

Flushing the liner: As the manufacturer says, "know your plumbing!" When at ALL in doubt, throw it in the trash! I had a few close calls in public (had to flush multiple times). Generally, if it's one of those public stools with no tank, you'll be fine. But standard ones with tanks are not a good idea!

A Bonus: The little g pants/cover make a perfect swim diaper... just leave out the flushable and put on the cover and voila! Worked great!

gDiapers

I've been considering using gDiapers and am trolling blogs to see what other moms think. Great review! I saw gDiapers on sale at Diapers.com so this could be a good time for me to try them out.

Also, for those that haven't used Diapers.com before, it's one of my favorites for good priced diapers. They deliver free and fast (2 days) for orders over $49 (sadly, not hard to do when there are diapers involved it seems).

Use the coupon code DOLLARSOFF for $10 off your total, but you have to have diapers (any kind) in your shopping cart for it to work.

They also accept paper coupons for diapers, wipes, and formula. If you have a coupon for diapers, you mail it in and they credit your account with the coupon savings for future purchases.

They do price-matching as well, which is the way to go when online shopping for big ticket items. I emailed them about a site that was selling the same breast pump for a lower price and they matched the price!

And if you're at the checkout page, there's a description about a free Parent Magazine offer on the lower left side of the page. Instead of getting the magazine subscription, you can print out a form, fill it out, mail it in, and receive an additional $14-$15 rebate check instead from Diapers.com. (I'm still waiting for mine though!)

Thanks!

Thanks for the review, Dani! I've been behind on reading my blogs, so I'm playing a bit of catch-up. Still can't decide whether it's worth it to add 3-4 g's for trips, etc. We use BG 3.0s and a few FBs, and so far I haven't really found them a pain to throw in a wet bag while on the go. However, a long car ride may change my mind. :) Anyway, I'm a sucker for cute tushies, so I may have to splurge anyway.

gdiaper washing

We recently switched to gdiapers with our 4-month old son. I also found it difficult at first to get the stain out of the plastic liners, but have recently found a simple way that has worked every time for us without having to use bleach. I just wash them with soap, then hang them outside to dry in a very sunny place. The sun makes the stains disappear within a few hours...this works with the cloth part, too (if it gets dirty, which it rarely ever does).

Thanks for the review,

Thanks for the review, Danielle! I'm glad to hear they are still working pretty well for you! And I completely agree that they are so cute! I can't wait to try mine out. Just 5-8 weeks left!
